Listening and Note taking

Objectives
To improve your listening skills
To develop your capacity of taking notes as you listen , which is a skill you have to master if you attend lectures in an English-speaking environment

Common sense tips
Anticipate the content from the title of the programme
Keep in mind what you already know on the topic
Check if the information given by the programme is consistent with what you already know
Concentrate on what you understand, do not worry too much about what you do not understand
Use the intonation, the situation and the context to infer the meaning
Decide whether the sentence is positive or negative depending on the context if you cannot hear it properly
Remember that the meaning is conveyed by the stressed words, so only write down the stressed words and the negations. That should enable you to reconstruct the meaning without writing too many words.
Remember that auxiliaries, prepositions, articles are not stressed so you may not hear them

Suggested Procedure
Watch the video / listen to the recording / without looking at the transcript. What you want to develop is detailed comprehension skills. Global comprehension is not enough at your level. It is vain to think that you can improve your listening comprehension skills by listening and reading the transcript at the same time.
Level 1: Answer the questions as you listen. You can pause while writing, you can also go backwards if there is something you did not understand. Once you have finished, check your answers are correct, then read the transcript
Level 2: Take notes as you listen. You can pause while writing, you can also go backwards if there is something you did not understand. Once you have finished, read the transcript and check you have written down all the relevant information

Follow-up suggestions
Look up the words you want to remember in a paper/on-line dictionary.
Write down these words and/or expressions in a notebook so that you can review them easily from time to time.
Organise the notes you have taken (top-down approach), and be ready to tell a colleague about the programme
